In his life as a professional musician he has performed with some of the finest musicians and in many parts of the world including Europe, USA, Asia and Australia. Gavin led his own U.S. based piano trio for 7 years with "the professor of the bass" Chris Riggenbach and brilliant improvisational drummer Christian Coleman. This trio recorded an album in New York, The Flight of The Arctic Tern, which also featured prominant New York saxophonist Mike Dopazo and all original compositions. This album was distributed in Japan and is also available online. Some other highlights of his time overseas include a concert series in Norway with trumpeter Gary Hoffman and performances in Slovakia with legendary drummer Dodo Sosoka.
Another aspect of Gavin Ahearn's musical skills which are in demand are his arranging abilities. He has arranged for shows and recordings including for popular New Orleans based soul artists Bobby Whavers and Ron Joseph and London based singer Dylan Foster.
The pianist returned to Australia in 2008 after spending 10 years overseas and has since been involved in some very well received performances with some of the finest Sydney and visiting jazz musicians including director of Synergy, Tim Constable; Sydney's most in demand drummer Nic Cecire; visiting trombone legend Adrian Mears and many others.
Gavin has recently recorded a new album of original works featuring Australia's greatest saxophonist, Dale Barlow, U.S. drummer Christian Coleman, the esteemed Matt Gruebner on bass and Caviar cohort Peter Toohey on guitar. He is currently the jazz piano tutor on the faculty of the Australian International Conservatorium of Music.
